Role summary

Reporting to the Safety Manager, this position focuses on helping prevent accidents, strengthening workplace safety practices, and ensuring compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, related regulations, and mine-specific requirements at West Red Lake Madsen Mine. The role follows a 14 days on / 14 days off rotation, with flights, camp, accommodations, and meals provided.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Take part in incident investigations and prepare or circulate the required documentation.
  • Carry out weekly scheduled workplace inspections alongside supervisors.
  • Record the outcomes of safety tours and follow through until issues are resolved.
  • Maintain accurate records for all training and documentation sign-offs.
  • Draft and update job task procedures.
  • Support the creation of training modules and underground procedures.
  • Help facilitate the occupational health and safety committee.
  • Deliver safety orientations and inductions.
  • Create and improve safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead safety meetings.
  • Spot hazards and take action to correct them.
  • Ensure workers follow Ontario OHSA requirements and mining regulations.
  • Act as a trusted safety resource for supervisors.
  • Promote a safe, supportive work environment aimed at achieving zero accidents.
  • Follow all applicable federal and provincial laws, regulations, and legal obligations.
  • Comply with corporate policies and internal procedures.
  • Assist with drug and alcohol testing processes.
  • Handle additional duties as assigned.

Experience, education, and technical requirements

The employer is looking for either an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or substantial underground mining experience of about 5 to 10 years across different roles in the mining sector. Supervisory experience is considered an advantage. Candidates should have Ontario Common Core certification, and Underground Supervisor Common Core plus Train the Trainer certification would be beneficial. Strong computer skills are needed, including confidence with Microsoft PowerPoint. The role also requires good knowledge of accident investigation methods, the ability to develop engaging training materials, familiarity with the gas badges program, and a solid understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and mining rules.

Other skills and abilities

Applicants should bring strong communication, organization, reporting, documentation, prioritization, multi-tasking, decision-making, and interpersonal skills. The role also requires the ability to work well with others, stay effective under pressure, and manage competing demands. A valid Class G driver’s license is mandatory.

Leadership expectations

The successful candidate will participate in weekend on-call coverage for the safety department. The company is looking for someone who is self-driven, positive, adaptable, comfortable working independently, and able to stay composed in difficult situations. Strong coaching, motivation, planning, and team collaboration skills are important, along with the ability to maintain confidentiality and contribute to the overall success of the safety and training team.
