Job Summary

The role of Roadway Worker In Charge (RWIC) involves overseeing railroad flagging operations and ensuring compliance with safety standards. This position requires travel averaging between 50% to 85% of the time and includes both full-time and part-time opportunities. The RWIC reports directly to the District Manager and does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees. Compensation is negotiable and reflects individual expertise and experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate jobsite activities effectively to maintain safe and efficient work environments.
• Communicate clearly and consistently with Dispatchers, Train Crews, and all relevant railroad and contractor personnel.
• Conduct detailed and thorough job briefings for all involved parties at each work site.
• Enforce compliance with all applicable Railroad, State, and Federal policies and regulations.
• Identify any rule violations and address them in accordance with official policies.
• Ensure contractors meet required training standards prior to work.
• Prepare and submit daily field reports summarizing the activities of contractors and railroad personnel.
• Maintain On-Track Safety protocols as mandated by 49 CFR 214 Federal Regulations.

Qualifications and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
• At least two years of prior experience in railroad environments such as Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, railway suppliers, contractors, or consultants, with a preference for experience in Maintenance Of Way (MOW) departments.
• Proficient in basic computer applications including email, phone, and text messaging.
• Competent using Android OS on tablets and smartphones, as well as Citrix applications.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
• Extensive technical knowledge relating to railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices.
• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Proven capability to build and sustain positive client relationships.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively for prolonged periods, potentially months.
• Completion of federal, client, and company-specific training programs is required.

Physical and Work Environment

• This position primarily operates outdoors in field settings.

• Standing for extended durations and walking on uneven terrain is common.
• Visual acuity including close distance, color perception, peripheral vision, and depth perception is essential.
• Must tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions and noisy, dusty environments.
• Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds is necessary.
