Job description
Role overview
RAC is hiring a Roadside Technician to support drivers across the UK as part of its Patrol team. This role suits a qualified automotive professional who can diagnose faults, carry out roadside repairs, and provide calm, reassuring service when members need help most. You will begin and end your shift from home, using a company-provided van and equipment to respond to demand-led call-outs.
What the role involves
- Carrying out mechanical roadside repairs and vehicle diagnostics.
- Assisting with emergency breakdowns across a range of situations, from simple battery or tyre issues to more complex troubleshooting.
- Using technical knowledge to decide the best fix for each customer and getting them moving again as quickly as possible.
- Delivering friendly, confident customer support while representing the RAC at roadside locations.
- Working flexible, demand-led shifts that average 40 hours per week, with the option to take on overtime.
- Starting and finishing your day from your driveway, rather than reporting to a fixed depot.
Candidate profile
Applicants should hold a Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance qualification, or an equivalent credential, and have at least 2 years of post-qualification experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic work. A full UK driving licence and a strong customer-first attitude are also essential. The ideal technician stays composed under pressure, enjoys variety, and can solve problems confidently in real-world roadside conditions.

The package includes a market-competitive base salary of £36,400 and a realistic on-target earnings figure of £61,000. High performers may earn more through bonus payments and enhanced overtime rates.
