Job description
Role overview
RAC is seeking a Roadside Technician to join its Patrol team in Leicester. In this night-based roadside role, you will respond to vehicle breakdowns across the UK, carrying out mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and emergency support at the roadside. Typical call-outs may involve flat batteries, tyre changes, and more complex fault-finding, and you will be expected to deliver fast, assured solutions while reassuring members in stressful situations.
The position begins and ends at home each day, and you will be provided with a RAC van, fuel card, full uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic equipment so you are fully prepared from day one.
RAC has a long-standing heritage of more than 125 years and continues to blend that experience with innovation in roadside automotive support. The company emphasizes member service, confidence under pressure, and variety in day-to-day work.
Pay and earning potential
The role offers a market-competitive base salary of £42,921.87 per year, which includes night allowance. The average on-target earnings range from £43,000 to £53,000, and the strong base pay can reach a realistic OTE of £60,000. Top performers may earn more through bonuses and enhanced overtime rates.
What you will do
- Attend roadside breakdowns and provide practical repair support.
- Carry out vehicle diagnostics and identify mechanical or electrical faults.
- Resolve common issues such as flat batteries and tyre problems.
- Handle complex fault-finding and make sound decisions on the spot.
- Offer clear, reassuring customer service throughout each call-out.
- Represent RAC professionally as a trusted ambassador at the roadside.
What you need
- A Level 2 light vehicle maintenance qualification, or an equivalent credential.
- Hands-on technical experience with electrical systems and diagnostics.
- A strong customer-first mindset.
- A full UK driving licence.
Benefits
- Colleague share scheme at no cost, giving you a stake in the business's future growth.
- Free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover from your first day.
- Car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle options after 12 months.
- 23 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 days with service.
- Pension contributions matched up to 6.5%.
- Life cover up to 4 times your salary, or up to 10 times with flex benefits.
- 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family.
- Discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and more through the Orange Savings portal.
Working style
This is a varied, fast-moving role where each day brings different challenges and different customers. You will need to stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and choose the right solution for each situation. RAC is looking for someone who enjoys problem-solving, adapts easily to changing conditions, and takes pride in delivering dependable roadside help.
