Role overview
RAC is hiring a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) team in Bournemouth. This is a structured mobile repair position focused on planned servicing and repairs for members at locations such as homes and workplaces, rather than emergency roadside work.
Working pattern and pay
- Base salary: £40,178 per year.
- On-target earnings can reach £52,000 per year.
- An optional guaranteed overtime arrangement can lift base pay to £44,385, with further overtime and bonus earnings available.
- The standard schedule is 40 hours per week.
- Core working hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with 1 in 4 Saturdays.
- Another schedule detail provided is Monday to Saturday availability between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.
- Additional overtime on rest days is paid at £30 per hour after the first month.
About the SMR role
The SMR division is designed around booked, organised jobs with clear schedules. There are no callouts, no roadside recoveries, and no unpredictable shift changes. You will work from a planned list of appointments and have the time, equipment, and support needed to complete quality repairs properly.

You will operate as part of the Bournemouth cluster, covering Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Wimborne, Ringwood, Wareham, and Swanage.
What the work involves
- Following a daily digital job schedule.
- Performing routine vehicle servicing.
- Carrying out diagnostics with advanced mobile tools.
- Completing more complex repairs that would typically be done in a workshop.
- Giving members practical advice and recommendations based on inspections.
- Conducting vehicle safety checks to RAC standards.
- Working independently while keeping the focus on planned, pre-booked appointments.
Tools and support provided
From the first day, you will be issued a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, complete tool set, and advanced diagnostic equipment. The role is supported by the RAC mobile service platform, with parts ordering and scheduling built into the workflow.
Requirements
- Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, or an equivalent credential.
- At least 2 years of experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles.
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points.
