Job description
Role overview
RAC is hiring a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division in Maidstone. This is a scheduled mobile repair role focused on planned servicing and workshop-style repairs carried out at members’ homes or workplaces, rather than roadside breakdown response.
Working pattern and pay
- Base salary: £40,178 per year
- On-target earnings: up to £52,000 per year
- Guaranteed overtime option available to raise base earnings
- Extra overtime and bonus opportunities also available
- 40 hours per week
- Core working hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
- 1 in 4 Saturdays
About the SMR role
The SMR team is a growing part of RAC, designed around planned maintenance and repair appointments. There are no emergency callouts, no roadside recoveries, and no unpredictable rota changes. Instead, you receive a pre-booked diary so you can complete each job with proper preparation, time, and support.
You will be covering the Maidstone cluster, including Maidstone, Medway (Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester, Strood), Sittingbourne, Sheerness, and Snodland. Work is carried out locally on a clearly organised schedule, giving you consistency and independence in equal measure.
What the day involves
Your day begins with a digital schedule of pre-arranged appointments. You will perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and complex repairs that would typically be completed in a workshop. You will also provide advice to members, explain findings, and complete vehicle safety checks to RAC standards.
From the start, RAC provides the equipment needed to do the job well, including a fully fitted van, fuel card, uniform, complete tool kit, and advanced diagnostic tools.
Why this role stands out
- Planned work instead of emergency breakdown attendance
- Predictable workflow rather than unpredictable demands
- Scope for detailed repair work, not just temporary roadside fixes
- Built-in time for quality workmanship, parts ordering, and support
- Use of RAC’s mobile service platform for clear job scheduling
About the organisation
RAC has a long history in UK motoring services and continues to grow its reach through a strong focus on service, recognition, and career development. The organisation welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and operates as an equal opportunities employer.
