Residential Helper

Role overview

GFL Environmental Inc. is hiring a Residential Helper for its Fairburn, GA operations. In this hands-on role, you will support residential waste and recycling collection routes, help keep neighborhoods clean, and work as part of a safety-focused crew.

Key responsibilities

• Support the driver in collecting household solid waste and recyclables across residential routes.
• Load collected material into the truck and place recyclables into the correct sections.
• Serve as an extra set of eyes during reversing and maneuvering in confined areas.
• Use hydraulic compacting equipment and make sure essential tools such as brooms and shovels are on board before departure.
• Interact professionally with customers and help identify or mark items that are not allowed for collection.
• Coordinate with supervisors and teammates to improve routing and uphold service quality.

Requirements and qualifications

• A high school diploma or GED is preferred, though it is not mandatory.
• About 1 to 3 months of relevant physical labor experience is helpful, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
• A valid driver’s license is an advantage.
• Must be able to meet the company’s safety-sensitive function standards.

Skills and competencies

• Ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.
• Clear communication for smooth coordination with the driver.
• Strong attention to safety while working on route.
• Comfort with physical, outdoor, and fast-moving work.
• Team-oriented attitude and reliability.

Working conditions

This is a physically demanding outdoor job. You will be active for the full shift and regularly exposed to weather conditions, including high humidity and summer heat. The role also involves traffic, moving mechanical equipment, and common outdoor noise.

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing in and out of the vehicle.
• Regular lifting and moving of up to 65 lbs.
• Ability to push or move up to 100 lbs with assistance.
• Work is performed outdoors 100% of the time.
