About the Role
Join the Department of Conservation in a vital conservation role based on Rakiura Stewart Island. This fixed-term, full-time position from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027 centers on hands-on research for the critically endangered Pukunui/Southern New Zealand Dotterel during their breeding season.
Key Responsibilities
- Executing comprehensive field surveys
- Monitoring bird populations and nesting activities
- Installing nest cameras for observation
- Collecting, organizing, and inputting research data
- Preparing summaries and reports of findings
- Planning and leading field expeditions
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong proficiency in back country and off-track navigation
- Ability to operate independently in remote, exposed environments
- Competency in GIS mapping techniques
- Experience with report writing and data analysis
- Leadership capabilities in managing projects or teams
- Experience in bird monitoring and data collection
- Physical fitness sufficient to carry heavy loads
- Good interpersonal and easygoing nature
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary education
- Experience in bird handling and banding
Work Conditions and Schedule
This role is based entirely on Rakiura Stewart Island while on duty, involving stays in small huts and campsites in exposed, sub-alpine zones. The work schedule follows a 10-days on, 4-days off rotation. During off periods, you may reside anywhere at personal travel expense, while travel between Invercargill and Rakiura Stewart Island for work shifts is provided by DOC via ferry.
Compensation and Eligibility
The salary range is $65,590 to $76,589 annually, dependent on skills and experience. Applicants must have a valid New Zealand work visa valid for the employment period.
