The opportunity

The School of Chemical Sciences is seeking a Research Chemistry Technician to join its Technical Services team. This role supports research laboratories and Chemistry Stores by keeping specialist equipment, materials and laboratory systems running safely and efficiently.

You will be part of a team that helps researchers carry out high-quality scientific work by handling day-to-day laboratory support, maintaining equipment, managing chemicals and ensuring strong standards of safety and compliance.

This is a varied hands-on role where every day can look different, from receiving specialist chemicals and gases to supporting laboratory users with equipment and processes, and contributing ideas to improve how the labs operate.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver technical support across multiple chemistry research laboratories.
• Oversee the daily running of Chemistry Stores, including consumables, chemicals, compressed gases and hazardous substances.
• Receive, prepare and issue laboratory supplies and equipment.
• Carry out calibration, servicing and preventative maintenance for specialist laboratory instruments.
• Assist researchers and students in using laboratory facilities and equipment safely and effectively.
• Track chemical inventories, hazardous materials and laboratory waste in line with regulatory obligations.
• Organise laboratory inductions and help promote a strong culture of safety and compliance.
• Work with researchers, academic staff, suppliers and service providers to keep operations running smoothly.
• Support continuous improvement efforts that strengthen laboratory workflows and the research experience.

Skills and experience required

• Background in a chemistry laboratory or research setting.
• Hands-on understanding of laboratory instruments, equipment and chemical handling.
• Sound knowledge of laboratory health and safety practices.
• Strong organisation and the ability to juggle competing priorities.
• Ability to build positive working relationships with researchers, students and colleagues.
• Initiative, adaptability and willingness to learn new systems and technologies.
• Careful attention to detail and commitment to high laboratory standards.

Qualifications

A qualification in Chemistry or a related field would be beneficial, although equivalent technical knowledge gained through relevant industry or laboratory experience will also be considered.

Employment details

This is a permanent full-time position of 37.5 hours per week. The salary range is $63,600 to $79,300 per year, depending on experience.
