Research Assistant – Te Kura Mātai Hinengaro | School of Psychology (Part-Time, 36-Month Fixed Term)

About the Role

Join the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Science, the leading science faculty in New Zealand, where world-class research is conducted in physical, biological, and computational sciences. This role focuses on mental health research specifically supporting Cook Islands communities, engaging with cultural knowledge, community voice, and youth wellbeing.

This position is part of a culturally grounded programme involving translation of mental health materials into Cook Islands languages, qualitative engagement with young people, and coordinating a large-scale Cook Islands mental health survey. The part-time position is for 18.75 hours per week on a fixed term basis of 36 months with a pro-rated salary range of $56,400 to $61,700 per annum depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in translating and culturally adapting mental health resources into Cook Islands languages.
• Support qualitative research activities such as talanoa and interviews with youth within Cook Islands communities.
• Collaborate in planning and implementing a large-scale mental health survey.
• Organize logistics for fieldwork and travel across several island locations.
• Facilitate participant recruitment, data collection, and manage research data efficiently.
• Help transcribe qualitative data and support its organization and analysis.
• Contribute to preparing research outputs including reports, presentations, and academic manuscripts.
• Assist with general project coordination and daily research-related tasks.

Candidate Profile

• A postgraduate qualification (Honours or Master’s degree) in Psychology, Public Health, Health Sciences, or similar fields.
• Experience with research project support and community-based work.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in diverse teams.
• High cultural awareness and sensitivity in Pacific contexts is essential.
