Research Assistant II - Systems Biology

About the Role

The Systems Biology department at UT MD Anderson is pioneering advances in cancer research by merging technology innovation, bioengineering, data science, and systems biology principles. The Research Assistant II plays a vital technical and coordination role in executing diverse research projects while ensuring the upkeep of laboratory instruments, samples, and reagents.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and execute laboratory experiments to support ongoing research initiatives.
• Collaborate with team members to push forward various scientific projects.
• Implement molecular and cellular biology methods such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, Western blotting, cloning, gel electrophoresis, cell culture, and transfection.
• Process human tissue samples for next-generation sequencing applications, including dissociation and preparation.
• Perform sequencing library construction and utilize imaging and flow cytometry techniques for experimental analyses.
• Undertake both routine and advanced cell culture tasks.
• Assist in administrative duties linked to the collection of human tissue samples.
• Maintain meticulous documentation of experiments and sample data, including storage tracking.
• Support the Principal Investigator in daily laboratory management and research operations.
• Manage reagent and equipment ordering, laboratory apparatus assembly, and maintenance of lab instruments.
• Ensure laboratory organization, cleanliness, and strict adherence to safety regulations.
• Perform additional duties as needed to support the lab's mission.

Education and Experience

• Minimum qualification: Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science discipline.
• Preferred credentials: Master's degree in Basic Science or a Medical degree.
• Scientific or experimental research experience of at least one year is required; however, candidates with advanced degrees may qualify without prior experience.
• Experience with molecular biology techniques, next-generation sequencing, human tissue processing, tissue sectioning and staining, and 10x Genomics assays is highly valued.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary range: $45,000 to $68,000 annually, with a midpoint at $56,500.
• Benefits include employer-paid medical insurance from day one for employees working over 30 hours per week, with options for dental, vision, life, AD&D, and disability coverage.
