Job description

Position Overview

The University of Galway invites qualified candidates to apply for a part-time research assistant role (0.75 Full-Time Equivalent) within the School of Natural Sciences, College of Science and Engineering. This fixed-term appointment runs from September 1, 2026, to November 30, 2028, and is supported by ERASMUS+, the European Union's key program for education, training, youth, and sport.

Project Details

The role aligns with the Folklore and Arts Bridging Learning and Expression through STEAM Education (FABLES) initiative, which leverages digital storytelling to connect communities with their environment, foster digital literacy, and integrate science with folklore across partner countries. The project particularly targets older adults from varied sociocultural backgrounds to ensure inclusive educational participation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with community groups to facilitate digital storytelling workshops.
  • Identify scientific concepts within gathered stories and design science-focused workshops responding to these narratives.
  • Conduct evaluations to assess the impact of these educational activities, contributing to the SilverSTEAM initiative aimed at broadening STEAM education access for older community members through innovative science and art engagements.

Compensation and Terms

The salary range for this role is between €34,129 and €44,311 annually, prorated for part-time engagement. Starting salary typically begins at the first point of the scale; however, consideration for advancement on the scale may be granted based on verifiable relevant experience, subject to project funding limits. Appointment is subject to public sector employment guidelines and any applicable employment permits.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful incumbent must undergo Gárda vetting compliant with Child Protection Policy standards.
