Reproductive Biology Scientist

Engender Technologies is a New Zealand biotech company developing a laser-based sperm-sorting platform that is improving breeding results across the dairy and livestock sector worldwide. The business works at the intersection of reproductive biology, photonics, microfluidics, and software, with the Biology & Research function playing a central role in product development.

This opening is for a Scientist to join the team at an early and important stage of growth. You will help run the reproductive biology programme, generate and interpret experimental data, and support the scientific standards that the platform relies on. The position is designed for someone who will gradually build autonomy and deeper specialist knowledge while working closely with the Senior Scientist and Biology Lead.

What you will do

• Plan and carry out experiments, taking on greater independence as your capability develops.
• Handle biological samples and analyse results in line with SOPs and high-quality lab standards.
• Keep laboratory records complete and compliant with the QMS, while helping refine protocols and SOPs.
• Assist with guidance and support for Biology Technicians in the lab.
• Contribute to the wider scientific culture through journal clubs, internal reporting, and cross-team problem solving.

Working pattern

The role involves a combination of regular business hours and afternoon/evening shifts. Applicants should be comfortable with a flexible timetable that may change from week to week.

Requirements

The company is seeking someone with a strong laboratory background and a practical, team-oriented approach.

• A BSc or MSc in biological sciences, reproductive biology, biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• Between 2 and 4 years of hands-on experience in a laboratory research setting.
• Practical familiarity with core methods such as cell culture, microscopy, and PCR, or comparable techniques.
• Comfort working with data and statistics.
• Strong attention to detail and a clear commitment to data integrity.
• A collaborative, proactive attitude suited to a small and fast-moving team.
