Remote Insurance Defense Paralegal

Role overview

Zirtual provides US-based virtual paralegal support to law firms across a wide range of practice areas and states. In this position, you would serve as a key partner to an attorney handling an insurance-focused practice, with an emphasis on keeping work organized, moving matters forward, and supporting technology-enabled legal operations.

The practice currently oversees about 140 active insurance claims, and the right person will help bring structure to incoming requests, improve workflows, and assist with legal research using AI-driven tools. This is a remote, flexible role with room to grow for someone who is proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently.

Work arrangement

The role starts at roughly 80 hours per month, with potential for additional volume as the relationship expands. Scheduling is flexible, though candidates who can work during Pacific Time business hours are preferred. You will generally be expected to be available during agreed-upon client hours, but not around the clock.

You will act as the primary point of contact for assigned client(s), coordinate closely with the attorney and Zirtual account supervisor, and help maintain smooth communication, accurate records, and timely follow-through.

Core duties

• Handle a busy email inbox, sort messages by priority, and identify urgent items quickly.
• Draft replies and keep communication threads organized and easy to track.
• Watch for deadlines and follow-up items so nothing important slips through.
• Perform factual and legal research with the help of AI-enabled legal tools and databases.
• Support monitoring and reporting for AI-related workflows in an insurance claims setting.
• Review information gathered from legal research tools and AI platforms.
• Track approximately 140 active insurance claims and keep matter details current.
• Maintain accurate status notes, records, and reports for claims and matters.
• Escalate issues that need attorney review or action.
• Build and refine SOPs, workflows, and other organizational systems.
• Recommend tools and process improvements that increase efficiency.
• Assist with database management and future case management software setup.
• Handle calendar coordination, scheduling, meeting logistics, and special projects as needed.

Experience and qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience handling the duties associated with this kind of paralegal work is generally expected.
• You should have paralegal experience or a comparable background in the legal industry.
• Strong organization, accuracy, and written communication skills are essential.
• You need to be able to conduct legal research and work independently.
• Comfort with AI-powered legal tools is important, along with a willingness to learn new platforms.
• You must be based in the United States.

Preferred background

• Experience with legal AI platforms and legal databases.
• Familiarity with tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or similar systems.
• Background in insurance defense, insurance coverage, or claims work.
• Experience improving workflows, systems, or operational processes.
• Exposure to case management software.

Compensation and engagement

This work is offered through Zirtual’s contractor network and is paid on a 1099 independent contractor basis. Pay depends on the client’s plan size, practice area, and overall need. For matched paralegal work, the expected minimum rate is $28 per hour; for legal assistant work, the expected rate is $20 per hour. Zirtual does not guarantee either hours or clients.
