Role Overview

The Baker position is integral to delighting clients by crafting and baking various baked goods adhering to Dexterra's high standards. This role is safety-sensitive, requiring compliance with drug, alcohol, and fitness assessments.

Work Environment and Amenities

  • This is a remote camp-based role primarily located in Nunavut, with periodic flexibility for remote work outside onsite schedules.
  • Rotational shifts typically include 3 weeks on followed by 3 weeks off.
  • Candidates will live in shared accommodations with single rooms equipped with cable TV, Wi-Fi access, gym facilities, laundry amenities, and communal spaces.
  • All travel to and from Edmonton Airport is covered, and meals and lodging are provided onsite.
  • The environment involves enduring northern remote climate challenges such as extreme cold, limited daylight, and isolation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor night shift bakery staff, overseeing operations and providing training.
  • Identify and implement improvements in overall baking operations.
  • Prepare baked goods from scratch and maintain pastry stock ensuring freshness and availability.
  • Develop and follow menus to maintain consistent quality and adhere to special dietary needs.
  • Ensure strict compliance with food hygiene standards in line with the Food Safety Act.
  • Maintain cleanliness by washing and sanitizing equipment and work areas.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum FoodSafe Level I certification required; higher certifications such as SafeCheck or HACCP are advantageous.
  • At least 3 years of baking experience in similar settings such as hotels or institutions with proven capability to prepare for large groups.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must pass mandatory drug and alcohol screening as well as a criminal background check.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Successful completion of a WHMIS test with a minimum score of 80% mandatory.
