About the role

Central Otago District Council is looking for a Regulatory Support Officer - Building to join its Building Team in Alexandra. This permanent full-time position plays an important support role in delivering Building Consent Authority (BCA) and Territorial Authority (TA) services.

You will work alongside Building Control Officers, Compliance Officers, and the wider Regulatory Services team to help keep building applications moving, keep customers informed, and ensure legal and procedural requirements are met.

What you will do

  • Check building applications and formally receive them in line with established procedures and delegated decision-making powers.
  • Handle Requests for Further Information and make sure statutory processing timeframes begin correctly.
  • Support the processing of Building Consents, PIMs, MultiProofs, Certificates of Acceptance, Exempt Building Work applications, amendments, CCCs, Certificates of Public Use, and Notices to Fix.
  • Prepare official documents and correspondence ready for issue.
  • Arrange inspection bookings, including inspections carried out remotely.
  • Track applications needing follow-up under legislation and manage customer notices and communications.
  • Answer customer questions about application progress, inspections, invoices, and regulatory processes.
  • Administer related fees and charges and confirm payment requirements are satisfied before documents are issued.
  • Keep regulatory records and registers up to date and provide information for reporting and audit needs.
  • Support Building Compliance Officers with Territorial Authority work such as swimming pools, BWOFs, and Earthquake-Prone Buildings.
  • Help maintain Objective Build and related regulatory systems through day-to-day user support and workflow assistance.
  • Take part in quality checks and ongoing process improvement.

What we are looking for

  • Background in administration, customer service, or regulatory support.
  • Strong planning and prioritisation skills, with the ability to stay accurate under pressure.
  • Clear communication and a strong customer service approach.
  • Comfort using a variety of computer systems and software tools.
  • Good judgement and the ability to work within documented procedures.
  • Local government or regulatory experience is an advantage.
  • Experience in building consent administration is preferred.
  • Experience with Objective Build or a similar system is preferred.
  • Experience handling invoicing, fees, and charges administration is preferred.
