Job description

About the organisation

Court Services Victoria delivers corporate and facility support that helps Victoria’s courts and tribunal, along with the Judicial College and Judicial Commission, carry out their judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative work. The wider Courts Group includes the Supreme, County, Magistrates’, Children’s and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria.

The organisation’s people support the Courts Group in meeting the priorities of each jurisdiction while also creating shared opportunities that benefit the system more broadly.

The County Court of Victoria, established under the County Court Act 1958, is the state’s main trial court and has both original and appellate jurisdiction. It deals with more than 12,000 criminal, common law and commercial matters each year, has unlimited monetary jurisdiction in common law and commercial cases, and hears all indictable offences except treason, murder and related offences in its criminal jurisdiction. The Court is staffed by 80 judges and over 300 employees, including judicial support staff, and also holds circuit sittings at 12 regional locations across Victoria. It is committed to continuous improvement guided by the International Framework for Court Excellence and aims to be a leader in court excellence that strengthens public confidence in the rule of law.

About the role

The Registrar for the Appeals and Post Sentence Application List (APSA) handles the administrative side of matters in that list at the County Court of Victoria, from the point of application through to finalisation.

What you will do

  • Oversee the movement of APSA matters through the list, working closely with the Head of List, Judicial Registrar and their associates.
  • Give practical procedural guidance to court users at the registry counter and answer general questions about court processes by phone and email.
  • Use specialist expertise to handle enquiries, serve intervention orders, process supervision orders and arrange case listings.
  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex or urgent enquiries, tasks and issues.
  • Carry out quasi-judicial and administrative duties as permitted under relevant acts, rules and regulations, including swearing affidavits and certifying documents.
  • Maintain systems and gather, identify and analyse performance data.
  • Help train staff who are new to the Division’s work.

What we are looking for

The preferred candidate will have experience in a legal setting, and prior exposure to the Victorian court system will be viewed very favourably.

You will bring strong written and verbal communication skills, sound problem-solving ability, the judgement to handle complex matters, strong stakeholder and relationship management capability, good systems thinking, and a strong commitment to service excellence and collaborative teamwork.

Contract details

This role is a fixed-term appointment for 12 months.
