Job description

Role Overview

The Registrar leads day-to-day registry operations for the court, with a strong focus on staff coaching, service quality, and smooth delivery across criminal and civil matters. The position supports the judiciary, court users, and other stakeholders while contributing to ongoing improvements in Queensland’s court services.

The role is centred on safety, innovation, efficiency, and better access to justice. It offers the opportunity to shape service delivery, respond to changing operational needs, and support the wider modernisation of the court system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide, coach, and supervise registry staff to build a cohesive and supportive team environment.
  • Place court stakeholders at the centre of service delivery and respond promptly and compassionately to enquiries, requests, complaints, and other service needs.
  • Act as an escalation point for risks involving Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence, as well as anti-social conduct by court users, using required assessments and appropriate information-sharing pathways.
  • Ensure administrative compliance by maintaining accurate data, following legislation, policies, procedures, and internal systems, and taking corrective action where needed.
  • Support Deputy Registrars in managing daily court operations, court listings and proceedings, and the handling of complex court matters.
  • Assist with workforce planning, performance management, staff development, and regular feedback to direct reports.
  • Build respectful and confidential working relationships with the judiciary, court staff, government agencies, self-represented litigants, and members of the public.
  • Apply sound financial, people, data, and risk management practices to maintain accountability and operational effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement process improvements and innovative ideas that strengthen the efficiency of registry services.
  • Contribute to initiatives that improve public understanding of the justice system and support court users from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Carry out statutory responsibilities as Justice of the Peace, Clerk of the Court, and Registrar, including routine and complex operational and quasi-judicial decisions within legal boundaries.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of service pathways to government and external support services, and provide accurate information to stakeholders.
  • Oversee registry recordkeeping activities, including retention, archiving, and disposal, by allocating resources appropriately.
  • Share information with the local community about government programs, services, and products to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Promote continuous learning, self-reflection, goal achievement, and a high-performance culture within the registry team.
  • Support a workplace culture focused on service excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
