Job description

Role overview

The Registrar is responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the court registry, with a strong focus on guiding staff, improving service delivery, managing resources, and supporting the judiciary and other stakeholders. The position contributes to the ongoing modernisation of the Queensland court system while promoting safety, innovation, efficiency, and better access to justice.

Key duties

  • Lead, coach, and manage registry staff to build a positive, supportive, and well-functioning team environment.
  • Keep court users and stakeholders at the centre of service delivery, responding promptly and compassionately to enquiries, concerns, issues, and complaints.
  • Act as an escalation contact for risks related to Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) and anti-social behaviour, complete required assessments, and determine suitable actions and information-sharing pathways.
  • Maintain compliance with administrative systems, legislation, policies, procedures, and data integrity requirements, while monitoring performance and applying corrective actions where needed.
  • Support Deputy Registrars in day-to-day operations, including court coordination, preparation and processing of complex matters, workforce planning, performance management, staff development, and feedback.
  • Build respectful, professional, and confidential working relationships with judges, court staff, government agencies, self-represented litigants, and members of the public.
  • Apply transparent financial, HR, data, and risk management practices to support accountability and operational efficiency.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and practical innovations that strengthen service effectiveness.
  • Contribute to initiatives that improve public understanding of the justice system and support court users from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Carry out statutory responsibilities as a Justice of the Peace, Clerk of the Court, and Registrar when required, including making routine and complex operational or quasi-judicial decisions within legislative limits.
  • Maintain knowledge of available services and referral pathways so accurate information can be provided to stakeholders.
  • Oversee court registry recordkeeping activities, including retention, archiving, and disposal, through effective resource allocation.
  • Share information with the local community about government programs, services, and products to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Promote continuous learning, self-reflection, goal achievement, motivation, and responsiveness to feedback within the registry team.
  • Support a workplace culture focused on service excellence, innovation, and ongoing improvement.
