About the Role

We invite a motivated journalist to join Mediahuis Ireland’s expanding team of regional reporters under Project Leap, an award-winning local news initiative recognized by INMA Global Media Awards. This role contributes to delivering local stories with national relevance via Independent.ie, collaborating across Mediahuis Ireland’s regional and national newsrooms.

Job Overview

As a Regional Journalist based in Galway, your primary responsibility will be to cover local news in Galway and Clare, producing both urgent breaking news stories and in-depth features, tailored for digital audiences. You will work alongside local photographers and freelancers, playing an active role with the regional audience team and enhancing our presence through social media channels. Upholding high editorial standards and legal requirements in your writing and editing will be essential, as will generating innovative ideas together with editors.

Core Responsibilities

• Conducting local interviews and producing quality feature articles.
• Delivering prompt coverage of breaking local news from Galway and Clare.
• Collaborating with photographers and freelance contributors locally.
• Engaging with the regional audience team and managing social media content.
• Ensuring all published content meets stringent editorial and legal standards.
• Contributing ideas to enhance editorial coverage and audience engagement.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Demonstrable experience in news reporting is required.
• Possession of a valid full driving licence.
• Residency within the Galway region.
• Previous work in local journalism is advantageous.
