Job description

Overview

The City of Pearland, Texas, is seeking a Recreation Specialist focused on nature programming to design and lead educational and recreational activities that foster community engagement with the natural environment. This position operates under general supervision and independently plans and executes work methods and sequences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver nature-centered programs and recreational activities.
  • Conduct educational outreach, including community engagement, leading field trips, workshops, presentations, and on-site classes, primarily at the Delores Fenwick Nature Center.
  • Lead outdoor activities such as kayaking as part of recreation programs.
  • Organize, schedule, plan, and assess the quality and effectiveness of programs and events.
  • Support the planning and management of nature-themed summer camps at the nature center.
  • Research and propose new nature-related programs and outdoor recreational activities.
  • Collaborate with agency staff, community groups, and professional volunteer organizations to coordinate events, training sessions, and other opportunities.
  • Build and sustain relationships with local businesses, vendors, and organizations year-round.
  • Maintain participant safety by inspecting event sites and holding current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and educational guidelines by staff, instructors, and participants during all programs and workplace activities.
  • Supervise program progress and evaluate success metrics.
  • Regularly inspect facilities, parks, and equipment for safety and inventory; manage resources using spreadsheets and GIS software.
  • Create promotional materials to advertise programs and events.
  • Recruit, hire, and evaluate contract instructors, managing schedules and fees.
  • Assist with care and upkeep of educational animals at the facility.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

The role involves light to medium physical effort such as walking or standing most of the time. It requires exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force and demands dexterity and precision in manual tasks.

Education and Experience

Applicants should have at least an associate's degree or an equivalent of two years of college coursework in recreation or a closely related discipline. Additionally, a minimum of one year of experience in recreation management or a similar field is necessary.

Certifications

Current certifications in First Aid and CPR are mandatory.
