Role Overview
The Recovery Officer will be responsible for monitoring delinquent accounts, following up with overdue borrowers, supporting loan recovery actions, coordinating with local authorities and legal teams where required, and helping resolve repayment issues.
Key Responsibilities
Loan monitoring
- Track the credit portfolio, assess default risk, and recommend practical recovery actions.
- Flag repayment issues early and escalate them for management review.
- Prepare monthly portfolio summaries to support management decisions.
- Review collection data to evaluate how products are performing.
- Submit weekly updates on loan account turnover.
- Keep an effective alert system for credit deterioration and recommend corrective steps.
- Support loan officers, loan managers, and compliance staff in handling non-performing loans.
- Contact borrowers by phone, visits, and reminders to keep repayments on schedule.
- Carry out post-disbursement checks to verify loan use and repayment performance.
- Follow up on repeat defaulters to reduce ongoing non-compliance.
- Maintain PAR levels in line with CBK requirements.
- Work with the Finance team to reconcile payments and ensure real-time posting of transactions.
- Meet monthly PAR targets.
- Negotiate repayment arrangements with defaulting clients.
- Start receivership procedures with the lawyer when required.
Debt recovery
- Manage an assigned portfolio of defaulted loans and determine the reasons for delinquency using sound credit judgment, collection strategy, and policy guidelines.
- Reduce non-performing debt through active recovery work and workable restructuring options.
- Conduct frequent calls, field visits, and borrower follow-ups to implement recovery plans.
- Prepare demand and reminder notices for defaulting customers and review credit files to ensure proper documentation and monitoring.
Customer engagement
- Build professional relationships with borrowers while pursuing recovery outcomes.
- Explain repayment responsibilities and available payment options to clients.
- Respond to questions related to overdue loan accounts.
Reporting
- Calculate weekly PAR reports covering product, individual, and SME portfolio analysis.
- Prepare recovery updates on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis for credit review.
- Share progress updates, key challenges, and recommendations.
- Study recovery patterns and recommend improvements.
Legal and compliance support
- Prepare and refresh accounts for possible legal action when needed.
- Ensure the recovery process follows Inkomoko’s Credit Policy and Procedures.
- Work closely with the lawyer to meet internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
- Review and improve credit and recovery policies and procedures to keep them compliant.
Requirements
- A degree in Finance or a related discipline.
- Fluency in English, Amharic, and the local language.
- At least 3 years of direct experience in group savings and group lending.
- Strong preference for experience in loan management, microfinance, capital leases, and finance access for micro and small businesses.
- Previous exposure to customer debt management in a lending setting.
- Experience advising entrepreneurs on business matters.
- Familiarity with loan management system software.
- Ability to communicate difficult messages clearly and confidently, and to push for repayment.
- Experience handling challenging clients and achieving constructive outcomes.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong follow-through.
- Comfort working with the civil court system; litigation background preferred.
- Strong perseverance, integrity, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and communication styles.
- Self-driven approach with the ability to plan ahead and stay focused on delivery.
- Comfortable using technology to work efficiently and achieve results.
