Job description

About the organization

Inkomoko exists to help entrepreneurs expand their businesses so they can improve household incomes, create employment, and strengthen the communities around them. Established in 2012, the organization has supported more than 100,000 entrepreneurs, including many refugee entrepreneurs, through training, consulting, access to finance, and systems-level market support. It is the largest investor to refugee entrepreneurs in Africa and operates with 900+ team members across 50 offices in Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

Recognized by the Financial Times in 2026 as Africa’s 5th fastest-growing company, Inkomoko is advancing a 2030 plan that includes expansion into three more countries, support for more than 550,000 entrepreneurs, and growth of its $30M loan fund to influence 7M lives.

Role overview

The Recovery Officer will be responsible for reducing loan delinquency and recovering overdue balances through borrower follow-up, site visits, coordination with local authorities and legal partners, account blocking where required, and practical resolution of default cases. The position plays a key role in protecting portfolio quality and supporting repayment discipline.

Key responsibilities

Loan monitoring

  • Track the credit portfolio, assess the likelihood of default, and recommend suitable recovery actions.
  • Flag repayment issues early and escalate them for management intervention.
  • Prepare monthly portfolio updates to support management decisions.
  • Review product performance using collection data and analysis.
  • Submit weekly updates on loan-account turnover.
  • Maintain a strong trigger-based reporting process for credit impairment and suggest corrective measures.
  • Support loan officers, loan managers, and compliance staff in handling non-performing loans.
  • Contact borrowers through calls, visits, and reminders regarding repayment schedules.
  • Carry out post-disbursement spot checks to verify loan use and performance.
  • Follow up on delinquent accounts to prevent repeated non-compliance.
  • Keep PAR levels within CBK regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with Finance to reconcile payments received with transaction postings in real time.
  • Work toward monthly PAR targets.
  • Negotiate repayment arrangements with defaulting clients.
  • Start receivership proceedings with legal counsel when needed.

Debt recovery

  • Manage an assigned portfolio of defaulted loan facilities and identify the causes of delinquency using sound credit judgment, collections methods, and applicable policy and regulation.
  • Reduce non-performing debt through active recovery efforts and workable restructuring solutions.
  • Make frequent calls, field visits, and borrower follow-ups to implement recovery action plans.
  • Issue demand and reminder letters to defaulting customers and review credit files to ensure proper documentation and monitoring.

Customer engagement

  • Build and maintain professional borrower relationships while pursuing recovery outcomes.
  • Explain repayment choices and borrower obligations clearly.
  • Respond to questions related to overdue customer loans.

Reporting

  • Prepare weekly PAR analysis for products, individuals, and SMEs.
  • Compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly recovery reports for credit review purposes.
  • Share progress updates, key obstacles, and recommendations on recovery activity.
  • Review recovery patterns and propose improvements.

Legal and compliance support

  • Prepare accounts for legal action and keep them current when litigation is required.
  • Ensure recovery activities comply with Inkomoko’s Credit Policy and Procedures.
  • Work with legal counsel to meet internal controls and external regulatory standards.
  • Help develop and regularly revise credit and recovery policies and procedures to keep them compliant.

Requirements

  • A degree in Finance or a closely related discipline.
  • Fluency in English and Amharic is required; Oromifa is an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years of direct experience in group savings and group lending.
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in loan management, microfinance, capital leases, and access-to-finance work for micro and small businesses.
  • Prior exposure to customer or debt handling in a lending environment.
  • Background in advising entrepreneurs on business matters.
  • Experience using loan management system software.
  • Ability to communicate difficult repayment messages firmly and professionally.
  • Experience handling challenging clients and achieving constructive outcomes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong follow-through.
  • Comfort working with the civil court system; litigation experience is preferred.
  • High persistence, personal integrity, and critical thinking ability.
  • Competencies sought: strong relationship management across diverse groups, initiative and forward planning, and effective use of technology.

Benefits

  • Work that contributes directly to livelihoods, job creation, and social impact across East and Central Africa.
  • A competitive salary with potential performance-based bonus.
  • A supportive culture with learning and growth opportunities.
  • A diverse workplace with policies that promote equity and inclusion.
  • A dynamic, entrepreneurial environment focused on innovation and impact.
  • Health insurance coverage for the employee and family.
  • Staff savings and provident fund benefits, plus negotiated bank rates for long-term staff.
  • Generous annual leave, parental leave, and sabbatical options.
