Role Overview

The Public Health Consultant will provide coordination, planning, and project support across several practice areas. The role works closely with practice area leads in Substance Use Abatement, Coalition-Building & Management, Grants Management, and Project Management & Design. Acting as a connector across teams, the consultant will help keep deadlines on track, support proposal development, manage administrative needs, and contribute to work with clients.

This position is well suited to someone who is highly organized, precise, self-directed, and motivated by mission-driven public health work. The ideal candidate communicates effectively, has experience working with communities, enjoys solving problems, and can balance competing priorities in a remote, fast-moving consulting environment.

The consultant will support multiple initiatives, including the North West Public Health Coalition, Mosaic (as temporary support during parental leave), and long-term work related to opioid abatement collaboration and business development within BME’s Substance Use Abatement practice.

Core Duties

Across the organization, consultant roles are generally structured as approximately 85% project work, 5% administrative work, and 10% business development. Consultants may lead or co-lead larger technical and advisory engagements, contribute to project design, work independently with limited day-to-day supervision, potentially oversee Associates and Senior Associates, deliver work that meets high client satisfaction standards, and help prepare or lead proposals.

In addition, this role will support multiple client engagements by coordinating activities, handling planning and documentation, and helping teams move work forward efficiently.

Detailed Responsibilities

• Support several client projects through coordination, planning, and administrative assistance.
• Help design and carry out public health programs, assessments, training sessions, and evaluations.
• Assist with grant management tasks such as budget preparation, expense tracking, workplan development, and reporting.
• Organize and support public meetings, trainings, and community events by managing schedules, preparing materials, and completing follow-up documentation.
• Keep records, data, and tracking tools organized so internal and client reporting needs are met.
• Draft written outputs including summaries, reports, presentations, and communication materials.
• Support the preparation of grant applications and other funding-related submissions.
• Help coordinate communication and logistics for coalitions and partnerships among stakeholders.
• Contribute to substance use abatement work, including opioid settlement fund stewardship, community needs assessments, harm reduction programming, and linkage-to-care coordination for local and state partners.
• Work with colleagues to improve internal processes and strengthen client service.
• Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support BME’s mission and client commitments.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• At least 4–6 years of experience in applied public health at the local, state, or federal level, project coordination, or a similar area; experience in a consulting firm is preferred for at least 2 years.
• A master’s degree in Public Health or a closely related discipline.
• At least 1–4 years of experience in client-facing work.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a demanding consulting setting.
• Strong organization, writing, and verbal communication abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple priorities effectively.
• Proven success working with colleagues, clients, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with public health accreditation, quality improvement, or performance management is an advantage.
• Comfort using Microsoft Office and common project management tools.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Experience supporting or leading community engagement efforts, including partner mapping, outreach, and qualitative data collection.
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings and stakeholder gatherings.
• Familiarity with open meeting law practices.
• Direct experience coordinating with municipal, local, state, or federal stakeholders.
• Experience working with municipalities or local health departments.
• Background in substance use, opioid abatement, harm reduction, treatment access such as MAT/MOUD and peer recovery, linkage to care, and/or tobacco control, including lived experience where applicable.
• Strong technical writing skills for public-facing reports and presentations.
• Alignment with BME’s shared values.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience contributing to business development, including sourcing opportunities, partner and client outreach, proposal writing, and budget or project scoping.
• Understanding of opioid settlement fund stewardship frameworks and allowable spending categories.
• Experience in substance use prevention, including youth-focused initiatives, school-based programming, or community prevention strategies.
• Familiarity with evidence-based prevention models such as the Strategic Prevention Framework or Drug-Free Communities model.
• Experience coordinating across the broader substance use ecosystem, including treatment providers, recovery organizations, harm reduction programs, public health agencies, and law enforcement or criminal justice partners.

Work Environment

This is a full-time remote role based in a home office setting within the United States. BME operates as a remote-first organization. The position may require occasional travel to client locations, conferences, or meetings as needed, with approximately one trip per month expected.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $79,040 to $112,320. New hires are generally placed somewhere between the minimum and the midpoint of the range, depending on internal equity and the amount budgeted for the role.
