Job description
Role overview
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner to join its Croydon service. The ideal candidate will be confident carrying out telephone triage and assessment work, delivering CBT-informed guided self-help, and supporting people experiencing common mental health difficulties in a primary care setting.
This post also includes the chance to help facilitate groups and workshops alongside other PWPs or High-Intensity Therapists. Experience in group delivery would be helpful, though not essential. The team also encourages PWPs to expand their clinical interests over time, including developing expertise in long-term conditions or working with presentations such as low self-esteem and OCD.
Career development
The service places strong emphasis on progression and learning. There are clear development routes into Senior PWP roles and HI trainee positions, with the team often acting as a stepping stone for future career growth. Ongoing training is available through CPD and internal workshops at S2 level, including topics such as OCD, health anxiety, and social anxiety. Qualified PWPs in the team are also encouraged to take on additional responsibilities and special interests to keep the role varied.
Main duties
- Carry out telephone-based assessments to understand a person’s psychological needs, decide the right level of intervention, and identify or manage risk.
- Deliver short, evidence-based CBT interventions for adults aged 17 and above experiencing mild to moderate anxiety disorders and/or depression.
- Provide group-based support for people with anxiety or depression.
- Work with interpreters when completing assessments and interventions.
- Apply a sensitive and inclusive approach when working with diverse communities, including black and minority ethnic groups.
- Work towards agreed service targets and performance expectations.
- Maintain strong standards of organisation, case management, and record keeping.
- Attend weekly one-to-one case management supervision, 4–6 weekly line management, clinical skills group supervision, and monthly service meetings.
Working pattern and flexibility
The trust offers flexible working and is open to discussing arrangements at interview. The role runs Monday to Friday, with working hours between 8:00am at the earliest and 7:30pm at the latest, supporting a good work-life balance.
About the team
You will join a welcoming, collaborative team made up of Step 2 clinicians, High Intensity Therapists, and administrative staff. The service values staff input, recognises individual strengths, and includes a Staff Health and Wellbeing Champion. The team is seeking an enthusiastic, compassionate, and committed person who wants to support the Croydon community through patient-centred, responsive, and high-quality psychological wellbeing services.
Work locations
The postholder will be based at team sites in Central Croydon and Bethlem Hospital, with the possibility of working from GP surgeries across Croydon and from home.
Bethlem Royal Hospital
Bethlem Royal Hospital is set within more than 200 acres of green space in the London Borough of Bromley, South East London. It has good access to main roads, offers free parking, and is within walking distance of Eden Park and West Wickham overground stations.
Croydon base
The Croydon Talking Therapies base is located in central Croydon, close to the busy high street with shopping and dining options. It is also within walking distance of East Croydon overground station, which provides quick connections into London.
