Commitment to inclusion

The organization supports diversity, equity, and inclusion and values teams made stronger by different backgrounds, identities, and experiences.

Role overview

The Property Claims Adjuster is an individual contributor role in Openly’s Property Claims team. The position involves handling homeowner property claims from the first notice of loss through final resolution. Success in this role requires technical claims expertise, strong customer focus, careful documentation, and the ability to investigate losses thoroughly, prepare precise estimates, and create an excellent experience for policyholders.

The ideal candidate works with honesty, shows empathy to policyholders and claimants, stays curious about coverage and cause of loss, partners well with vendors and teammates, and moves claims forward with urgency.

Key responsibilities

You will manage property claims end to end, perform investigations and coverage analysis, create estimates, communicate with all parties, and work with internal and external partners to reach fair and timely claim outcomes.

Claims handling and investigation

  • Manage property claims from first notice of loss through closure, including supplements, while keeping the process timely and accurate.
  • Investigate each claim thoroughly by reviewing policy language, evaluating coverage, and determining liability.
  • Identify possible subrogation opportunities and spot signs of potential fraud.
  • Choose the best inspection approach based on claim complexity, whether virtual, field-based, or through a third party.
  • Use video tools, AI-assisted solutions, and other emerging platforms to complete virtual inspections.

Estimating and documentation

  • Prepare accurate property damage estimates using Cotality estimating software and established standards.
  • Maintain complete file notes and documentation, including coverage letters, estimates, activity logs, and settlement records.
  • Follow reserving best practices and update reserves appropriately throughout the claim lifecycle.

Customer communication and service

  • Handle claims proactively with a strong focus on speed and quality.
  • Deliver high-quality service to policyholders, claimants, and agents throughout the claims process.
  • Keep insureds, claimants, agents, and leadership informed with clear, professional, and timely updates.
  • Negotiate settlements with insureds, claimants, and vendors in a fair and professional manner.
  • Remain available in phone queues to assist customers and respond quickly to inbound questions.

Vendor and internal collaboration

  • Coordinate with vendor partners such as contractors, independent adjusters, engineers, and other service providers.
  • Work closely with internal teams including SIU, Subrogation, Legal, and Underwriting to support aligned claim decisions.

Process improvement and team contribution

  • Share ideas that improve efficiency, quality, and overall claims operations.
  • Support CAT response efforts and be available for extended hours during storm events or periods of high claim volume.
  • Contribute to a team culture built on accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.

Work arrangement

This is a full-time, exempt role in a remote-first environment. Regular availability during core business hours is expected, and occasional extended hours may be required during catastrophe events or periods of elevated claim volume.

Compensation

The budgeted salary range for this role is USD 70,000 to 90,000. The full salary range is USD 60,750 to 112,250. Final pay will depend on the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications.

Benefits and perks

  • Remote-first working culture
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage options
  • Life and disability insurance, including voluntary options
  • Up to 8 weeks (320 hours) of paid parental leave, subject to eligibility requirements
  • 3% company contribution to the 401(k), even if the employee does not contribute
  • USD 1,500 home office stipend
  • USD 2,000 annual professional development fund
  • USD 50 per month wellness allowance
  • Paid volunteer service hours
  • Referral program with rewards
