About the Role
This full-time position is based in Torrance, CA, reporting directly to the Engineering Director. The role offers a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000 annually, depending on experience. The focus is on designing pediatric wheelchair soft goods and stylized hard products that blend innovation, functionality, and visual appeal.
Key Responsibilities
- Design pediatric wheelchair soft goods and stylized hard goods balancing innovation and aesthetics.
- Work collaboratively with engineering, product management, and suppliers to meet cost targets and brand standards.
- Prepare prototypes and lead fit checks alongside engineering and product management teams.
- Develop original on-brand concepts using sketches or 3D visualization tools.
- Leverage trend research, consumer insights, and brand DNA to create compelling product designs and visual stories.
- Maintain organized design assets including libraries, inspiration boards, and presentations.
- Contribute to research and innovation in color, material, and finish (CMF).
- Take part in design reviews and present designs to internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with external suppliers to ensure manufacturability.
- Document and finalize design specifications, including material details, 2D manufacturing drawings, and standards.
- Manage ISO biocompatibility compliance for all softgoods.
- Maintain schedules and adhere to deadlines.
- Work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Qualifications and Experience
- 2 to 3+ years experience in product development, design, and trend research, particularly with softgoods in automotive, medical Class 1, or related fields.
- 1 to 2+ years vendor management experience, preferably with suppliers in Asia.
- Strong proficiency with 2D CAD software such as DraftSight or AutoCAD.
- Experience designing for manufacturability.
- Preferred proficiency in SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards is desirable.
- Familiarity with MRP/ERP systems for BOM creation and cost analysis is a plus.
- Prototype sewing experience with softgoods is advantageous but not mandatory.
- High computer literacy with strong skills in Microsoft Office.
- Willingness to travel occasionally (up to 10%) to sister companies, trade shows, or supplier locations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in industrial design, graphic design, or a related design discipline.
