Job description
Role overview
As an Operational Support Grade at HMP Wayland, you will help keep a busy prison running safely and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. The position involves working within a supportive team and carrying out a wide mix of duties, including gate security and searches, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and observing phone and CCTV activity. The work is varied and active, combining desk-based tasks with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.
Location and travel
This vacancy is based in a rural area where public transport options may be limited. Having a driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless a specific requirement is mentioned. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time for every shift and should consider your commute carefully before applying.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed for this position. It is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in demanding situations, and is comfortable working in a fast-moving environment. To help prison operations run smoothly and securely, you will need sound judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team-focused attitude.
Working pattern
You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends.
Career development
This role offers the chance to contribute to public safety and support meaningful work inside the prison system. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may have occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role also provides valuable insight into how prisons operate and may open the door to other positions, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you can expect training, development support, and progression opportunities. Benefits include 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis; 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays; access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service; and access to the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional notes
If you think this opportunity matches your skills and outlook, you are encouraged to apply.
