Job description
Role overview
This role is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Wayland. You will help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently as part of a team that handles a wide mix of daily support tasks.
What the job involves
The position combines office-style duties with hands-on work. Typical activities include gate security checks, searching, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring calls and CCTV. The work can also involve lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.
Working arrangements
This is a shift-based position and includes evenings, weekends, and nights. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to reach the workplace on time for each shift.
Location and travel
Some prison sites are in rural areas where public transport can be limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport may help, although it is not required unless specifically stated for a site. You should think carefully about how you will travel to and from work.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
Career growth
This role offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can lead to further opportunities within the prison service, including the option to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and development
You will receive training along with opportunities to progress and build your career.
Pay and benefits
The salary is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you can expect paid annual leave, bank and public holidays, access to a Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional benefits details
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme
