Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin, supporting the daily running of a busy prison. The role is varied, active, and team-based, combining desk-based tasks with physical duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.
What you will do
You will help maintain safety, security, and smooth operations across the establishment. Typical duties include gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone calls and CCTV.
Working pattern and travel
This post involves a range of shifts, including nights and weekends. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so punctual travel to and from the workplace is essential. Because some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport may be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless a specific requirement is stated for the site.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal person will communicate well, remain composed under pressure, use sound judgement, and work effectively as part of a team. The role suits someone who wants a fast-moving environment and is interested in building a career in the prison service.
Career development
This role offers a chance to gain practical knowledge of how a prison functions and may open pathways into other prison jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme. Training and development opportunities are provided.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the role includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
About the employer
HM Prison and Probation Service is responsible for supporting the important work carried out every day in prisons, with a focus on protecting the public and making a positive impact on lives.
