Job description
Role overview
HMP Long Lartin is hiring an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help with the smooth, secure, everyday running of the prison. This is a varied, active position that blends desk-based duties with practical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.
What you will do
You will be part of a team handling a range of support tasks, including security checks at the gate, searching, receiving and managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone use and CCTV.
Working pattern and travel
The post involves a mix of shifts, including weekends and nights. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so it is your responsibility to travel to and from work on time. The prison may be in a rural location with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays calm in pressured situations, uses common sense and sound judgement, and enjoys working as part of a team. It offers a route into prison service work and may lead to other roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on joining, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Training and progression
You will receive strong training and development support, with opportunities to build experience and progress within the prison service.
