Job description

Role overview

As an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton, you’ll help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently from day to day. The role is hands-on and varied, blending desk-based work with practical tasks such as security checks at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring phone calls and CCTV, and moving between locations on the prison grounds to escort vehicles. Some duties can involve lifting and carrying, so it is an active position.

Travel and commute

This establishment is in a rural area where public transport may be limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not required unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time for every shift and consider your travel arrangements carefully.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This could be a strong fit if you communicate well, stay composed when pressure builds, and work effectively with others. Good judgement, common sense and a strong team mindset are essential. The position involves a fast pace and includes a mix of weekday, weekend and night shifts.

Career impact

This is a chance to contribute to public safety and support the important work that takes place inside prisons. Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the site. The role also builds practical knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and development

You will receive structured training along with opportunities to grow and progress within the service.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the position includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
