Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is recruiting an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This is a varied, hands-on position with a mix of desk-based work and more physical duties.

What the role involves

You will support everyday prison operations by carrying out a range of tasks such as gate security and searches, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job can also involve lifting, carrying, and walking across prison grounds to escort vehicles.

Transport and shift requirements

Some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport is useful, though not essential unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, and you must ensure you can reach the workplace on time. You should think carefully about the site location and your transport arrangements before applying.

Licence requirement

Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate will communicate well, stay composed when pressure is high, use sound judgement and common sense, and work effectively as part of a team. The role is fast-paced and can be a good starting point for a career in the prison service.

Working pattern and career development

You will work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to help maintain round-the-clock operations. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may occasionally interact with them depending on the establishment. The role also builds valuable knowledge of prison operations and may lead to other opportunities, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and benefits

You will receive training and development support, along with a package of employment benefits.

Additional benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 bank, public and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
