Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. This is a hands-on support role with a mix of desk-based duties and practical tasks, working as part of a team in a fast-moving environment.

The job includes security checks at gates, searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, watching phone activity and CCTV, and moving around the prison grounds to escort vehicles and complete other duties. Some parts of the work involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking.

Shift pattern and location considerations

This prison may be in a rural area where public transport is limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not always mandatory unless the vacancy specifically says so. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time. The location and your travel arrangements should be carefully checked before applying.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This entitlement allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

About you

No formal qualifications are needed for this position. The ideal candidate will communicate well, stay calm when pressure is high, and bring sound judgement and common sense to the role. A team-focused attitude is essential, as the work supports the daily running of the prison.

You should be comfortable working varied shifts, including nights and weekends.

Career value

This role offers a chance to contribute to public safety while building practical knowledge of how a prison functions. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officer duties, though occasional interaction may occur depending on the site.

The role can also open pathways into other prison jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and development

You will receive training along with opportunities to grow and progress within the service.

Pay and benefits

The stated salary for this position is £29,432.

  • 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
