Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade (OSG) for HMP Bullingdon. This is a busy, hands-on role that helps the prison operate safely and efficiently each day.
The position is varied and combines desk-based work with active duties. You may handle gate security and searches, process deliveries, supervise visitors, monitor phone calls and CCTV, and carry out other tasks that support the prison environment. Some parts of the job involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Working pattern and travel
This role includes a range of shifts, including weekends and nights. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and arrive on time.
Some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport. Having a driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always essential unless specifically required for the vacancy. For this post, applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with category D1 entitlement, allowing the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.
Who this role suits
You do not need formal qualifications for this position. It may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses judgement and common sense, and enjoys working closely with others as part of a team.
The role offers an opportunity to support public safety and contribute to the important work carried out in prisons. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
Training and progression
This role can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route. Training, development, and progression opportunities are available.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this post is £29,432.
- 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
