Job description
Overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Full Sutton. This role offers a salary in the range of £33,746 to £38,003 and gives you the chance to make a direct difference to public safety and to the lives of people in custody.
The position suits someone with integrity, resilience and strong interpersonal skills. The work is varied, fast-moving and rarely the same from one day to the next. With experience, there are opportunities to develop, progress and specialise within the prison service.
About the role
Prison officers work with offenders in a challenging but meaningful environment, combining authority, empathy and communication to maintain safety, encourage positive behaviour and support rehabilitation. The role can involve acting as a peacekeeper, a mentor or a guide depending on the situation.
Working style and expectations
This is not a standard role, and people from many backgrounds can succeed in it, including parents, teachers, retail workers and former armed forces personnel. The service values empathy, confidence and the ability to communicate well. You must be able to build professional, constructive relationships with offenders, including those who may be at a very low point in their lives.
Because teamwork is essential in this environment, you must be committed to working closely with colleagues and contributing to the safety of prisoners, staff and the wider prison community.
You will need to be available for rotating shifts and weekend working.
Training, development and benefits
Full training is provided, along with development opportunities and the possibility of moving into specialist areas over time. Benefits include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the practical benefits, the role offers the reward of helping someone move towards a better path, which is a level of job satisfaction that is hard to find elsewhere.
Application
Candidates who feel they have the right qualities for the role are encouraged to apply.
