Role overview

OPTrust is hiring a Principal for its Private Markets Group within the Investments Division. This is a 12-month contract position based in Sydney, Australia. The role sits inside a global investment team focused on private equity and infrastructure, with Sydney serving as a key hub for Developed Asia coverage.

OPTrust manages one of Canada’s major pension funds and administers the OPSEU Pension Plan, supporting more than 110,000 members. What the role involves

The Principal will contribute to evaluating new investment opportunities, conducting detailed analysis, and supporting the ongoing management of portfolio investments. The position reports to the Senior Managing Director and works closely with internal investment professionals, external advisors, management teams, and investment partners.

Key focus areas

• Source and assess investment opportunities alongside the broader Private Markets Group.
• Carry out deep-dive due diligence, including sector review, financial modelling, and returns assessment.
• Represent the team in discussions with management teams, investment partners, and outside advisors.
• Take part in investment committee deliberations and decision-making.
• Support monitoring and management of existing portfolio investments.
• Track emerging trends relevant to the current portfolio.
• Maintain key relationships with external partners and portfolio company leadership.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate has 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, institutional investment, or a closely related professional setting. An undergraduate degree is required, and additional certifications are considered an advantage.

Success in the role requires strong applied investment and valuation analysis skills, a self-starting and collaborative mindset, attention to detail, and comfort working in a demanding, less structured environment. Excellent communication and presentation ability are essential, along with strong Microsoft Office skills. Frequent travel is also required.
