Job overview

The Principal NDT Technician plays a senior hands-on role in inspection activities and has a direct effect on the performance of the immediate team and related groups. The position involves sharing technical information clearly, working independently within established inspection practices, and taking a lead role by coordinating the work of others. This role also contributes ideas for improving inspection processes and methods.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out non-destructive testing on welds and materials using one or more approved methods such as PAUT, TOFD, PT, MT, ET, RT, or MUT, following the project NDT plan, procedures, code requirements, and contractual specifications.
  • Conduct inspections in line with approved procedures and internationally recognized codes and standards.
  • Assess results against the applicable acceptance criteria and decide whether work is acceptable or must be rejected.
  • Work with the assigned Quality Inspector to confirm when tasks have been completed.
  • Record compliant work and flag any non-conforming work that needs correction.
  • Make sure repaired or corrected work is re-inspected by the Quality Inspector before the original NDT method is used again.
  • Ensure NDT equipment is properly maintained and that calibration records are kept up to date.
  • Prepare equipment for inspection when needed.
  • Create the scan plan and system setup using the technique sheet when required.
  • Perform static and dynamic calibration before, during, and after inspections as part of daily routine checks.
  • Review weld quality, make acceptance or rejection decisions, and refer to the relevant code and acceptance criteria.
  • Complete clear and accurate inspection reports using the approved format as part of the daily workflow.
  • Look after equipment before, during, and after the work is completed.
  • Apply testing criteria according to the relevant specifications or standards and interpret the results.
  • Help develop inspection techniques for complex geometries.
  • Support the training and development of other team members.
  • Carry out duties in an ethical and safe manner in line with professional occupational guidelines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or a qualification in a relevant field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the NDE method for which the candidate is being hired.
  • ASNT, PCN, or CSWIP Level II certification.
  • Ability to use computers and Microsoft Office programs effectively.
  • Experience with relevant preparation software such as ES Beam Tool.
  • Occupational qualification under internationally recognized certification schemes such as PCN, CSWIP, or ASNT.
  • Strong ability to evaluate inspection results accurately, determine weld disposition, and prepare reports according to applicable codes and acceptance criteria.
  • Capability to collect inspection data accurately during weld inspection.
  • Ability to read and interpret codes and acceptance criteria.
