Role Overview

The Principal Environmental Engineer will contribute senior-level environmental expertise across proposal development, project execution, approvals, studies, and stakeholder coordination. The role covers environmental engineering support from concept to detailed design, along with management of deliverables, interfaces, compliance, and team guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support proposals by shaping the execution approach for the discipline, preparing cost estimates, drafting proposal material, and presenting to clients.
  • Take ownership of all or part of the technical proposal when required.
  • Plan man-hour budgets, schedules, staffing levels, and skill mix to meet project needs and the Discipline Manager’s direction.
  • Ensure continuity of project coverage during leave and unexpected absences.
  • Coach, train, and support the delivery of training activities.
  • Resolve issues across disciplines, with vendors, and with customers.
  • Ensure all technical work and team activities comply with health, safety, environmental, and security requirements.
  • Develop environmental strategies required for project approvals.
  • Coordinate and manage regulatory approval workflows.
  • Prepare environmental engineering deliverables for conceptual through detailed design stages across a wide range of projects.
  • Carry out permitting studies, including ESHIA.
  • Perform environmental impact modelling.
  • Lead studies related to solid and hazardous waste management.
  • Assess discharges and emissions, including MARPOL-related work.
  • Contribute to master planning activities.
  • Perform sustainability assessments.
  • Lead air pollution control studies.
  • Identify the scope and requirements for environmental studies.
  • Build internal and external networks and manage client interfaces.
  • Facilitate Environmental HAZID/ENVID workshops and maintain environmental risk registers.
  • Support HAZOP workshops where needed.
  • Contribute to Formal Safety Assessments.
  • Coordinate reliability studies, including FMEA and RAM, where relevant to environmental topics.
  • Review environmental design criteria during project phases.
  • Develop or support Environmental Management Systems and environmental management plans, including CEMP and OEMP.
  • Oversee implementation of EMS and EMP requirements.
  • Perform site audits for EMS/EMP compliance when needed.
  • Identify and raise the required set of project procedures and deliverables.
  • Manage CTRs, estimate work scopes, and report progress.
  • Lead and coordinate teams of professional and technical staff.
  • Mentor graduate, design, and project engineers, as well as technicians and technical specialists.
  • Engage with local communities and other stakeholders on consulting matters.
  • Work in line with Quality Assurance systems and project controls.
  • Collaborate with project managers and project engineers to ensure compliance with Worley’s project management and management system requirements.
  • Monitor closure of identified risks and opportunities.
  • Follow safe working practices, apply OH&S procedures, and actively promote health, safety, and environmental awareness.

Experience and Background

The role requires extensive senior-level experience in environmental engineering studies, particularly for municipal, industrial, hydrocarbon, and petrochemical facilities, as well as related infrastructure.

Education and Qualifications

A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or another related discipline from an accredited university is required. A postgraduate qualification such as a Master’s or Doctorate in Environmental Studies is preferred. Experience working in a regulatory authority is also considered an advantage.

Technical Knowledge

The position calls for strong knowledge of HSE management and environmental engineering practices in project environments, including permitting, environmental audits, impact modelling, waste studies, water and wastewater pollution control, discharge and emissions assessments, master planning, sustainability work, water and waste recovery/reuse, air pollution control, and HSE register management.
