About the role
Reporting to the Chief Internal Auditor, this position sits within a collaborative team of 13 and is responsible for leading the Principal Audit Unit. You will play a key role in a team environment where the work has real impact.
What you will do
- Lead and support 3 direct reports in delivering high-quality advisory services and internal audits that align with strategic priorities across the NZDF.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members to strengthen capability and support career growth.
- Act as a strong advocate for the internal audit function, positioning the team as trusted partners focused on success and continuous improvement.
- Promote hybrid working practices that support a flexible and agile approach to getting work done.
The role covers a broad range of NZDF activities, including camps and bases, overseas posts, governance arrangements, health service provision, and complex logistics and supply chain operations.
This position is located in Wellington CBD. After you are established in the role and have helped build a high-performing team delivering quality service to the NZDF, flexible working arrangements may be discussed.
Skills and experience
We are looking for a highly experienced audit specialist who is also an inspiring and committed leader.
- Strong senior-level background in audit, assurance, or business advisory work.
- Well-developed project management capability with proven success handling multiple priorities and concurrent assignments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to produce clear, engaging, and action-oriented reports for different audiences.
- Proven track record of leading teams, with a strong focus on coaching, developing, and growing professionals.
- Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable.
Additional information
This position involves occasional travel within New Zealand and internationally, as audit work is spread across multiple NZDF operating locations. A willingness and ability to travel is required.
Security requirements
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens and able to obtain and maintain Top Secret security clearance.
