Position Overview
An exciting permanent opportunity exists for a Porter/Driver based at University Hospital Ayr. The role is varied, combining clinical support and portering responsibilities including patient meal delivery, grounds maintenance, hospital security assistance, and driving tasks.
Working Hours
Two posts are available:
Post 1 involves 33.5 hours over a bi-weekly rota which covers day, night, and weekend shifts.
Post 2 is a Relief post that covers a flexible range of shifts, both planned and unplanned.
Starting April 2026, NHS Scotland’s Agenda for Change staff hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours per week for full-time employees, with part-time hours pro-rated accordingly, without affecting earnings.
Key Responsibilities
- Transporting patients throughout hospital sites safely and respectfully.
- Delivering meals, linen, specimens, stores, equipment, and supplies as per hospital needs.
- Managing waste and undertaking mortuary duties as required.
- Coordinating internal and external mail delivery.
- Providing support in security-related duties and assisting during incidents involving violence and aggression.
- Maintaining hospital grounds and general portering duties as necessary.
Requirements and Eligibility
- The role requires a valid UK driving licence as an essential qualification.
- The ideal candidate should be motivated, reliable, and able to work flexible shifts and locations within the hospital.
- Previous experience in similar roles is advantageous, and comprehensive training will be provided.
- The post is restricted to internal applicants from NHS Ayrshire & Arran only.

- Sponsorship may be available for certain eligible roles; however, Band 2 posts and bank contracts are excluded from sponsorship eligibility.
