Job description
Role overview
The Office for Youth is looking for a dedicated Policy and Project Officer to join the Youth Programs team in Melbourne. This multidisciplinary team delivers a range of funded programs and initiatives focused on improving youth engagement, strengthening social cohesion, and helping communities build protective factors that reduce the risks and consequences of young people becoming disconnected.
What you will do
In this position, you will support policy development, project delivery, and program administration across youth participation and early intervention work. You will contribute across several areas of the Youth portfolio, helping produce high-quality advice for the Minister for Youth and senior leaders on matters of strategic importance, including initiatives designed to improve outcomes for young people in Victoria. You will also oversee the management and administration of Office for Youth grant programs and related priorities.
Key accountabilities
- Partner with others to design and deliver policies and projects that respond to identified issues and provide accurate advice on complex Office for Youth policy and program matters.
- Coordinate projects and grant programs through the full lifecycle, while supporting continuous improvement work. This covers planning, risk and contract oversight, stakeholder coordination, project tracking, progress updates, and evaluation.
- Prepare prompt, detailed support and analysis for managers and executives, and produce clear written briefings that assist decision-making. This includes assessing information critically and identifying possible impacts and risks linked to policy options.
Candidate profile
The department is seeking someone who is adaptable, proactive, organised, and able to work well in a team. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, along with the ability to build effective relationships across government, community, youth, and broader community sectors. Experience or knowledge in grants and program management, solid policy and analytical capability, and a genuine interest in the issues affecting young people in Victoria will be highly valued.
Application and selection details
Applicants should review the position description for full information. Applications are to be submitted online, and supporting documents may be uploaded in .doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt, or .rtf format. Candidates must provide a CV and a cover letter of up to 2 pages that addresses suitability for the role against the key selection criteria. Eligibility to work in Australia is required: applicants must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa. Work eligibility will be verified during recruitment. The preferred candidate will also need to complete pre-employment checks, including a national police check and misconduct screening.
