Job description

Role overview

This is a permanent position at Grade B with a salary range of £28,598 to £34,434. The role is subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review, and the working pattern is 36.5 hours per week.

We are seeking several Playground Technicians to join Birmingham’s Parks and Play Service. The post plays an important part in keeping playgrounds and related park assets across the city safe, compliant and well maintained for children, families and wider communities.

Reporting to the Parks and Play Technical Officer, you will handle planned and reactive maintenance, complete safety checks, and repair play equipment and park furniture in line with European Standards and RPII Operational Inspection guidance. The work involves both outdoor and workshop-based tasks, and may need to be carried out in all weather conditions.

What you will do

  • Perform playground inspections according to RPII Operational Inspection standards and agreed service timetables.
  • Spot defects and carry out repairs to playground equipment and park infrastructure to maintain safety and compliance.
  • Prepare risk assessments and ensure all work follows health and safety law as well as service procedures.
  • Operate and look after tools, machinery and equipment, including access platforms, lifting gear and workshop tools.
  • Repair and maintain safety surfacing, play equipment and park furniture in all weather conditions.
  • Complete painting, graffiti removal and general refurbishment work in play areas and associated sites.
  • Assist with stock control and materials management alongside the Parks and Play Technical Officer.
  • Ensure vehicles, tools and machinery are used and maintained according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Keep inspection records, reports and other required documents accurate and up to date.
  • Support emergency and reactive repairs, including occasional out-of-hours work where needed.
  • Work with colleagues to identify faults, risks and site issues, then take suitable action.
  • Support the safe installation and upkeep of playground equipment and water safety measures when required.
  • Help promote a strong safety culture, professional standards and continuous improvement across playground services.

What we are looking for

You should have hands-on experience in a trade, engineering, construction, fabrication or similar practical environment, plus the ability to work safely and effectively outdoors and in physically demanding conditions.

Confidence in using tools and equipment, following technical standards, and interpreting instructions, drawings or specifications is important.

A solid understanding of health and safety in operational settings is essential, along with the ability to work well in a team and deal professionally with members of the public when required.

A full driving licence is required.

Training and development will be offered, including RPII inspection training and other relevant qualifications.

Benefits

  • Membership of the West Midlands Pension Fund with generous employer contributions.
  • Enhanced annual leave entitlement of 30 days, increasing with length of service.
  • Access to the My Rewards scheme, offering discounts and savings across 800+ brands.
  • Health and wellbeing support, including confidential employee assistance, counselling and occupational health services.

You must upload an up-to-date CV with your application, as it is required for shortlisting. Applications without a CV cannot be considered.
