Job description
About the Role
This role is part of the SEQ Track Renewals Re-Sleepering team within Queensland Rail’s SEQ Track and Civil Infrastructure business. The base location is the Brisbane Airport depot. The position suits an experienced plant operator who wants to expand into rail civil infrastructure, with training and development provided, including the chance to complete a Certificate II in Track Rail Infrastructure.
What You’ll Be Doing
You will be part of a semi-independent team and operate civil machinery such as excavators and loaders. After training, you may also operate specialised rail plant used for sleeper replacement.
Work Pattern and Location
The work covers the Queensland Rail network, with jobs in South East Queensland and across the state. A large portion of the role involves travel away from home, approximately 80% of the time.
For regional work, the usual roster is 9 days on and 5 days off, generally from Monday through the following Tuesday, including weekends. Working away allowances and penalty rates apply.
For South East Queensland work, you should expect regular weekend shifts, on average every second weekend, with penalty rates applying. Typical hours in both regional and SEQ locations are 6:00am to 4:00pm, though night shifts may be required when business needs change.
Key Duties
- Run plant and equipment safely and efficiently while following all relevant manuals and track standards.
- Carry out trackworker duties, which include manual labour when required.
- Use plant and equipment in full compliance with Queensland Rail policies, rules, and safe work procedures.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications
The following would be helpful, but are not mandatory for this position:
- Civil plant licences or tickets, preferably for excavators and loaders
- Truck licence
- Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure
Pay, Benefits and Working Away Arrangements
The expected hourly pay is around $37. Travel time is paid. When working away, local accommodation is provided where possible, usually a self-contained apartment with cooking facilities. Meals are included in the working-away allowance.
Uniforms are supplied, no personal tools are required, and you may leave your own vehicle at the depot while away. Annual leave is 5 weeks, and ongoing training is available.
Selection Process and Other Conditions
Shortlisted applicants may be asked to complete psychometric testing and health assessments, including drug and alcohol screening.
Diversity and Inclusion
Queensland Rail is committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities and customers it serves. The organisation values inclusion, collaboration, respect, and difference, and promotes a safe environment where people can be authentic regardless of gender, age, cultural background, disability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.
