Job description

About the role

Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland is hiring a compassionate and experienced Physiotherapist to become part of a supportive, mission-led multidisciplinary team. The position focuses on providing physiotherapy support to people living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus at different stages of life, while working alongside families, carers, and healthcare professionals to strengthen mobility, independence, and overall well-being.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed physiotherapy assessments for members of all ages, including children, teenagers, and adults.
  • Create and deliver personalised treatment programmes aimed at improving movement, everyday function, pain control, and physical independence.
  • Advise on assistive equipment, orthotics, and changes to the home or surrounding environment that can improve quality of life.
  • Work in coordination with the Health Promotion and Development Officer, Family Liaison Officers, HSE staff, schools, and hospitals to support joined-up care.
  • Provide both face-to-face and remote appointments, including home visits and clinic-based sessions.
  • Take part in family support meetings, training workshops, and community outreach activities.
  • Keep clear, accurate, and confidential documentation in accordance with data protection requirements.
  • Track progress and outcomes and share findings to help improve the service over time.
  • Support advocacy work and public awareness efforts related to physical health and disability rights.

Working conditions

The role involves travel across several regions to support members. Flexibility is important, as occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Work will take place in a range of settings, including private homes, clinics, hospitals, and SBHI events.

Essential requirements

  • A BSc or MSc in Physiotherapy with CORU registration.
  • At least 2 years of post-qualification experience, ideally gained in neurodisability, paediatrics, or community-based services.
  • Working knowledge of spina bifida, hydrocephalus, or comparable complex conditions.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to communicate effectively using a person-centred approach.
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A full, clean driving licence and access to a personal vehicle, as home and community visits are essential parts of the job.
  • Strong organisational ability and confidence using IT systems.
  • A deep commitment to supporting and empowering SBHI members and their families.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.

Desired experience

  • Previous work in disability services or within a charity or nonprofit organisation.
  • Experience with assistive technology, orthotics, and wheelchair assessments.
  • Background in delivering training or educational sessions for families or professionals.
