Job description

About the company

Phocas builds software that helps businesses such as manufacturers, distributors, and retailers understand their data and make smarter decisions. The company has around 300 people, has been operating for twenty years in data and financial analytics, is based in Sydney, and has a strong development team in Christchurch.

Its culture is centered on curiosity, teamwork, and care for the people using the product. The focus is on understanding customer problems in depth, making thoughtful design choices, and delivering software that is dependable, maintainable, and genuinely valuable.

Role overview

This graduate programme is designed for software engineers who want to build strong technical foundations while rotating through different product teams. Over the first two years, you will work across four teams and get exposure to a variety of products, tools, and technologies so you can discover where your strengths fit best.

The team uses AI tools to speed up ideation, option generation, coding, and repetitive work. As a graduate, you will learn to use these tools carefully and effectively, balancing their benefits with sound judgment. You will also strengthen core software engineering skills by writing code, learning how systems work, and understanding trade-offs under the hood.

Ideal candidate

The company is looking for someone who is either recently graduated or about to graduate with a degree in software engineering, computer science, or a similar field. The right person is naturally inquisitive about customers, technology, and better ways to solve difficult problems.

You should be creative in your approach to problem-solving, comfortable using modern AI tools with good judgment, and experienced with modern web and UI-focused languages and frameworks. Strong communication, empathy, collaboration, and a genuine desire to keep learning are all important.

Additional information

The expected start time is November or early December 2026. Applicants are asked to include their transcript with the application.

Because of current immigration restrictions, only candidates who are based in New Zealand and hold citizenship, residency, or a valid work visa can be considered.

Benefits

The role comes with a competitive remuneration package, including salary, Southern Cross, and additional benefits. It also offers strong opportunities for professional growth, the chance to learn from experienced tech talent in Christchurch, a central office location with parking for cars, bikes, and scooters, and access to snacks and beverages.

Equal opportunity and agency note

Phocas is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be considered without discrimination based on race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristic.

Recruitment agencies are informed that the company does not accept unsolicited resumes and will not pay fees for them.
