Job description

About the role

The Department of Conservation is seeking a Permissions Advisor to support the assessment and management of applications connected to commercial and recreational activity on conservation land and protected wildlife. This is a permanent, full-time position, primarily based in Christchurch, with flexibility for another location if the right person is identified.

You will work as part of a permissions team that operates across multiple service centres and helps ensure activities on public conservation land are authorised appropriately, aligned with legislation, and carried out in ways that protect natural values.

In this position, you will be involved throughout the application journey, including early discussions with applicants, reviewing and analysing submissions, and preparing professional reports that inform final decisions. The role also requires close collaboration within a team environment to achieve accurate and high-quality outcomes.

A significant part of the job is relationship management. You will interact with a broad mix of people, including internal colleagues, external customers, stakeholder groups, and industry representatives, offering advice and guidance in a professional manner.

Skills and experience

The ideal candidate will bring some of the following strengths:

  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and spoken, with the ability to build credibility and trust.
  • Strong analytical ability, along with the capacity to turn findings into well-structured professional reports.
  • Good organisation and time management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with the legal or regulatory processes relevant to the work, or a background in environmental management or planning.

What’s in it for you?

The organisation promotes a workplace where people can contribute, develop, and succeed. It is focused on building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture, and supports flexible working arrangements where these can be accommodated for the role.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online with a CV and cover letter that explain your relevant experience and what motivates you to apply. Email applications cannot be accepted, and feedback is only provided to shortlisted candidates.

Reasonable adjustments can be discussed if you require support during the recruitment process.
