Job description
Role overview
Jacobs is looking for a Permanent Way Lead to help deliver major rail programmes across Ireland. This position sits at the center of heavy rail, light rail, and metro work, with the opportunity to influence nationally significant infrastructure and strengthen the company’s Permanent Way capability across the country.
The role supports high-profile clients including Iarnród Éireann, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the National Transport Authority. Project involvement spans the full delivery cycle, from option selection and consenting through detailed design and construction. Current and recent programmes mentioned include the Cork Line Level Crossings, Galway Line, Station Accessibility Programme, Cork Luas, and MetroLink.
The company also highlights its broader contribution to Ireland’s transport strategy, including support for the All-Island Strategic Rail Review and the National Development Plan. This is a leadership-focused opportunity for someone who wants to raise delivery standards, shape technical outcomes, and help grow a rail team nationwide.
Key responsibilities
- Direct Permanent Way engineering delivery so that work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
- Ensure all activities are aligned with Irish Rail standards, client expectations, and applicable legislation, including CDM and CSM-RA.
- Oversee compliance across design and construction, including approvals, standards, and technical specifications.
- Review Permanent Way design and construction outputs, identify issues, and manage associated risks.
- Act as a technical lead and authority for Permanent Way matters.
- Take on CRE/SPE/PE duties, or an equivalent function, to provide senior engineering guidance and resolve complex technical problems.
Requirements
- Must be based in Ireland to support regular in-person engagement with key clients.
- Previous experience in a CRE, SPE, PE, or equivalent Permanent Way leadership role.
- Proven ability to lead Permanent Way engineering work and deliver client requirements safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
- Experience managing Permanent Way design and/or construction while meeting relevant standards and legal requirements.
- Strong working knowledge of CDM, CSM-RA, risk assessment, and engineering management practices.
- Familiarity with Irish Rail standards, approval pathways, and standard deliverables.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following tools: Bentley RailTrack, Bentley OpenRail, ClearRoute2, DGauge Rift, and/or Bentley MicroStation.
What Jacobs offers
- 23 days of paid leave, with the option to purchase additional time off of up to 2 weeks per calendar year.
- A strong pension arrangement with employer contributions of up to 14%.
- Flexible working arrangements, including a 4.5-day week where the role allows.
- Health, income, and life protection benefits, including income protection and life assurance worth 4 times salary.
- Additional support such as wellbeing initiatives, a share plan, learning support, and travel schemes.
- Access to a global organisation with opportunities for growth, collaboration, and professional development.
