Job description
Role Overview
This is a permanent full-time itinerant caretaking role with a Catholic school board in Renfrew County, Ontario. The assignment is based primarily in Pembroke and Petawawa, but may also extend to other board sites across the county. Work locations are scheduled by a supervisor, and the position supports an equal opportunity employer serving multiple schools and administration buildings.
The board operates 2 administration buildings and 20 schools, including 18 elementary schools and 2 secondary schools, across 13 communities and 7,851 square kilometres. These schools support 4,580 pupils.
Working Hours and Union
The schedule is 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. This position is affiliated with CUPE Local 1202.
Key Duties
- Maintain cleanliness standards across school facilities through regular inspection and cleaning.
- Clean interior and exterior building areas such as doors, floors, walls, windows, ceilings, light fixtures, stairways, washrooms, carpets, furniture, and equipment.
- Carry out assigned custodial tasks in designated areas as directed by Plant Services staff.
- Perform scrubbing, washing, polishing, wet and dry mopping, waxing, stripping, and spray buffing.
- Vacuum, remove recycling, handle garbage, move furniture, and respond to calls or pages during the day.
- Shovel, salt, and sand walkways and parking areas as needed, and record maintenance activity even when no action is required.
- Keep records for fire systems, extinguishers, emergency lighting, water flushing, eye wash checks, sand/salt logs, work orders, purchase order requests, and other required reports.
- Look after custodial equipment and ensure it remains in good working condition.
- Monitor heating, cooling, and lighting to maintain comfort and support energy conservation.
- Follow WHMIS requirements and ensure chemicals are stored, labelled, and used safely according to Safety Data Sheets.
- Attend after-hours school events for fire, security, or other support needs.
- Help outside groups using school facilities by opening and securing doors and reporting issues such as damage, smoking, or fire-code concerns.
- Support fire drills and lockdown drills when requested by the Principal or designate.
- Inspect classrooms daily and complete additional duties assigned by management.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma is required.
- At least 1 year of experience in commercial or institutional janitorial work is required.
- Applicants must be able to handle physically demanding tasks, including ladder use and lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying moderate to heavy loads of up to 50 lbs.
- A dependable means of transportation is required.
- Travel beyond the primary assignment areas may be required, with mileage reimbursed according to board policy.
- Candidates should understand relevant building and fire codes, WHMIS, safety procedures, personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, and materials handling.
- Strong people skills are needed to work effectively with supervisors, staff, teachers, students, contractors, and coworkers.
- Applicants must be able to write requisitions and reports, read technical and safety materials, and use basic math for measurements and technical calculations.
- Basic computer skills are needed for data entry, internet use, email, and common software programs.
- Working knowledge of HVAC, basic electricity, basic plumbing, yard maintenance, cleaning methods, fire extinguishers, and security systems is expected.
- The role requires the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
