Job description
Overview
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is building a 12-month recruitment pool for Payroll Support Officer (Level 2) and Payroll Officer (Level 3) roles. These positions are based in Kensington and support the People and Culture Directorate, which delivers a wide range of people management services across the department and related authorities, including payroll, recruitment, safety and health, workers compensation, employee relations, and learning and development.
The department works across biodiversity conservation, park and natural resource management, and related attractions, offering a role that combines payroll accuracy with public sector service delivery.
Role summary
The Payroll Support Officer position focuses on transactional payroll administration. It ensures employee salary, leave, and allowance payments are processed correctly and on time, while following established procedures, industrial instruments, and legislation. The role works under routine supervision and helps maintain payroll quality by identifying and escalating discrepancies.
The Payroll Officer position is a more advanced payroll and workforce services role with a strong emphasis on quality assurance, compliance, and customer service. It covers a broad range of payroll activities such as commencements, changes, leave, allowances, terminations, overpayments, and review of fortnightly payroll reports. Working with limited direction, the role supports payroll governance, collaborates with workforce services colleagues, and helps improve payroll controls and quality assurance practices.
Selection criteria
Applicants may apply for either role or both. If applying for both, both sets of selection criteria must be addressed.
Payroll Support Officer (Level 2): Candidates must show experience processing payroll or workforce service transactions in a computerised payroll or HRMIS environment, accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions and work to deadlines, and the capacity to work effectively in a team while providing responsive customer service in a high-volume environment.
Payroll Officer (Level 3): Candidates must demonstrate experience in payroll processing and quality assurance in a complex organisation, including verifying transactions for accuracy and compliance; applying awards, agreements, superannuation, and taxation requirements; using an integrated HRMIS to process and correct payroll data; and working collaboratively in a fast-paced payroll setting while managing their own workload and maintaining professional relationships.
Leadership expectations
DBCA uses Leadership Expectations as a shared framework for workplace behaviours. In the Payroll Support Officer role, the focus is on Personal Leadership. In the Payroll Officer role, the expectation is Leading Others.
Benefits
The department offers an attractive public sector package and a range of employee benefits, including flexible work options, 12% employer superannuation, salary packaging, four weeks of annual leave with a 17.5% loading paid each December, three extra public sector holidays each year, cultural leave for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, access to study, bereavement, foster caring and parental leave, an employee assistance program for staff and family, an annual National Park Entry Pass, learning and development programs, and free staff parking.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online and should include a written statement addressing the relevant selection criteria and a current CV with details of two referees, including one recent or current manager or supervisor.
For the Payroll Support Officer role, the statement must address the three selection criteria in no more than two pages. For the Payroll Officer role, the statement must address the four selection criteria in no more than three pages. Candidates applying for both roles should address both sets of criteria.
Additional information
The recruitment pool remains open for 12 months. Applications close at midday on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. The pool will be used to fill vacancies based in Kensington. Appointments from this process may be made within a 12-month period to permanent, contract, or casual roles, including contract appointments with the possibility of later permanency. A further search for applicants may be undertaken if needed to create a broader or more competitive field.
Conditions
Before starting, the successful applicant must have or obtain a current National Police Check issued within the last 6 months and showing a satisfactory outcome.
To be eligible for permanent appointment, applicants must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents. For contract employment, applicants must hold a visa that permits them to live and work in Australia for the full contract period.
DBCA is an equal opportunity employer and encourages Indigenous Australians, young people, people with disability, culturally diverse applicants, and women to apply. Reasonable adjustments are available for candidates with disability during recruitment and at work. Aboriginal applicants may also seek assistance through Jobs and Skills WA.
